Journal 14-Feb-2023
With temperatures the last few days being above freezing, most of the snow and ice had melted from the bike trail near my house and it was calling me to run on it. Morning temps were right around freezing so I decide to put on my winter running gear and head outside.
Sticking to the guidance from my Physical Therapist, the plan was to run/walk at 60/60 (60 seconds run, 60 seconds walk) for 30 minutes. The first mile was unremarkable with negligible discomfort in my right hip and a little tightness in my left. Just after a mile, I started having discomfort during the walking intervals, a little achiness and tightness. At mile 10 in a half-marathon, I would not have thought anything of it. But after just one mile, I took notice. During the running intervals, however, there was noticeably less discomfort, if any at all.
After 15 minutes I unconsciously did not turn around. A little bit later I consciously decided I was going to complete 5K. The discomfort I was feeling while walking did not get any worse with time. It was not inhibiting, just annoying. So, I finished my first (of 2023) 5K continuous run/walk in 37 minutes. Only 7 minutes over my plan. I did not ignore by PT’s advice by too much 😎
Post run I had a social meeting for coffee with some former co-workers. My hip was stiff and achy, but not disabling. For every ache or pinching sensation, I feel a “getting stronger” sensation. Maybe the aches I feel are from muscles recovering from yesterday’s strength exercise. Regardless, I’m happy with my 5K run/walk today and I’m going to try to think positive for the rest of the day. Discomfort is from healing. Continue building strength in weak muscles and the running will come with time.
