Today was one of those days I probably should have listened to my body and stuck to the program. But I discovered that Apple finally added the ability to configure interval workouts in the Workout app on Apple Watch. And we were about to get 6 inches of snow which would make my favorite bike trail un-runnable. So, ignoring the fact my hip was already a bit achy, I headed out to beat the snow and test out my newly found Apple Watch feature.
I configured a custom run for repetitions of 2 minutes “work” and 1 minute “recovery”. I set out for 30 minutes (10 repetitions). The Apple Watch did exactly what one would expect. A bell sounded and Siri announced when it was time to transition from recovery to work and vice-versa. After 10 reps I was close to 5K so I did one more to get over 5K.
Doubling the time for run intervals had its impact. My right hip was all knotted up afterwards. It was not as much internal joint pain as it was muscle tightness and soreness all around. Though the discomfort and lack of mobility was discouraging on one hand, on the other hand I found it encouraging that the discomfort was mostly muscular. I did a deep foam roller session to loosen things up. That helped though my right side continued to be uncomfortable.
I half regret that I went out running. The plan was for indoor cycling, which would have had less adverse effect. I’ll have to wait and see how I feel tomorrow.
